The apparatus comprises a pyrolysis reactor having a reaction chamber (12). The reaction chamber is present in the form of a capillary (14). The capillary is connected to height-adjustable storage vessels (16) for a liquid-like high-temperature heat transfer medium (20). The apparatus further comprises a unit for adjusting a flow rate of the high-temperature heat transfer medium, and a pressure controller, which controls inlet pressure of the high-temperature heat transfer medium into the storage vessels. The pyrolysis reactor includes an inlet having hydrogen-containing compound. The apparatus comprises a pyrolysis reactor having a reaction chamber (12). The reaction chamber is present in the form of a capillary (14). The capillary is connected to height-adjustable storage vessels (16) for a liquid-like high-temperature heat transfer medium (20). The apparatus further comprises a unit for adjusting a flow rate of the high-temperature heat transfer medium, and a pressure controller, which controls inlet pressure of the high-temperature heat transfer medium into the storage vessels. The reaction chamber is connected to the liquid-like high-temperature heat transfer medium via the capillary. The pyrolysis reactor includes an inlet having hydrogen-containing compound. An input and an output of the reaction chamber are connected to the liquid-like high-temperature heat transfer medium via the capillary. The high-temperature heat medium includes a metal or molten metal. An independent claim is included for a process for production of hydrogen by thermal decomposition of a hydrogen containing compound.
