The converter (1) has a HSS switch (IGBT1) arranged in transverse branches (6). A discharge capacitor (C1) is provided for the HSS switch and connected in series with a discharge path (9) that runs parallel to the transverse branches and is provided with a diode (D7). The discharge path is provided for a controllable discharge circuit (10). A passage direction of the diode is equal to a regular flow direction of a current through the HSS switch. The discharge circuit comprises an auxiliary switch (IGBT4), where the HSS switch and the auxiliary switch exhibit same reference potential. The HSS switch and the auxiliary switch are designed as insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) semiconductor switches.
