An apparatus and a method for diagnosing a malfunction of a fuel cell stack based on a measurement of a stack current are provided. The apparatus comprises an alternating current generating circuit configured to apply an alternating current to a fuel cell stack which is driven by a basic operating current (direct current); a current measuring circuit configured to measure a current of the fuel cell stack caused by the direct current applied to the fuel cell stack; and a micom configured to diagnose a malfunction of the fuel cell stack based on a current measurement result of the current measurement circuit.
