The invention relates to a method for the manufacture of a plastic article. 24, comprising a polymeric substrate as well as a covalently to the substrate bound, 3-dimensional, hydrophobic polymer structure, comprising the steps of:(a) loading a surface of a polymeric substrate with a thermally activatable or light stimulable initiator, which is suitable according to its excitation radicals on the surface of the substrate, that is to say at the polymer of the substrate, wherein the initiator to generate from a first solvent on the surface of the substrate is adsorbed,(b) loading of the essentially of the first solvent freed from the substrate, on which the initiator was adsorbed, with at least one hydrophobic, polymerizable, polymers or monomers, which is suitable for grafting reagent, with the on the surface of the substrate produced free radicals, to form a covalent bond to react, wherein the grafting reagent without a solvent or in an organic, second solvent is used, wherein the solubility and / or the swelling of the substrate in the first solvent is greater than in the grafting reagent or, respectively, as in the mixture of the second solvent and grafting reagent, and(c) by irradiation of the excitation of the initiator with the initiator and the grafting reagent loaded surface of the substrate with light of a suitable wavelength or activation of the initiator through the supply of heat, so that the initiator on the surface of the substrate and the radical generating a grafting reagent covalently to the surface of the substrate bound (three-dimensional) polymer structure is formed.The present invention also relates to a plastics material article which can be produced according to the method, comprising a polymeric substrate as well as a covalently to the substrate bound hydrophobic polymer structure, wherein the article is a contact angle of water on the covalently bonded polymer structure of at least 75°, in particular of at least 90°, preferably of at least 100°, particularly preferably of at least 110°.
