The method involves connecting control devices (105 to 115) with each other in data technical manner by a communication network. The data traffic is detected in the communication network. The detected data traffic is compared with previously detected data of the data traffic. A possible data manipulation is detected as result of the comparison. The data traffic is detected by the communication network or by a communication channel directly communicating with the two control devices. A switch-off signal is transmitted to a control device in the case of a detected data manipulation. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a device for operating a communication network of a motor vehicle; (2) a computer program for executing the communication network operating method; and (3) a computer program product with program code stored on a machine readable carrier.
