The method involves comparing a geographic location (102) of a navigation system with a geographical area (101), and receiving traffic-related information for a subset (103) of a given route (104) within the geographical area if the location is within the geographical area. A predicted value of a selection criterion for the route is determined. An alternate route between a start segment (SK) and an end segment (SG) of the subset is recalculated based on the received traffic-related data when the predicted value of the selection criterion is greater than a preset reference value.
