The system has a host vehicle control unit for identifying reference points along a road of travel, where each reference point identifies a position of a host vehicle (32) and signal reception property. The control unit selects a set of the reference points having identified positions and associated signal reception properties, utilizes the signal reception properties at reference points associated with received broadcast messages and determines position of a remote vehicle (30) as function of the signal reception property at each selected reference point. An independent claim is also included for a method for determining position of a remote vehicle relative to a mobile host vehicle based on safety alert messages broadcast from the remote vehicle related to event in a road of travel.
