The method involves determining a value of air per cylinder for a cylinder intake event or a cylinder non-intake event of a present cylinder of a motor (102) based on an air mass flow signal and an engine speed signal. A state signal is produced, where the signal indicates whether the present cylinder is activated or deactivated. A current accumulated air mass in an intake manifold (110) of the motor is determined based on the state signal. An air mass value for the present cylinder is determined based on value of air per cylinder and the current accumulated air mass.
