A drive train system comprises an internal combustion engine, a first electric machine and an electromechanical transmission, which is used to transmit torque to a final drive. One method of controlling the powertrain system in the presence of a selected controlled neutral operation of the electromechanical transmission includes monitoring vehicle speed and only if the monitored vehicle speed indicates a low speed zone, restricting transition from a current engine operating condition.
