The method involves controlling an engine (20) and traction motor (34) in an automatic mode to produce a wheel torque based on a pedal position and a vehicle speed. The wheel torque is increased to transition to a select shift mode based on a driver modifiable virtual gear number, the pedal position, and the vehicle speed. The wheel torque is decreased in the select shift mode when virtual gear number is increased. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a controller for hybrid electric vehicle; and (2) a vehicle.
