The device has a shift locking housing (10) blocking movement of a gear selection lever (1) in absence of a support (24) on a footbrake pedal of a vehicle. A retractable lever (20) drives the housing out of a locking position of the lever in presence of the support on the pedal of the vehicle in order to release movement of the lever. An electromagnet (15) is controlled by the support on the pedal to move from the locking position movement of the lever to a position in which movement of the lever is released. A metal plate (25) is located opposite to the electromagnet unit. An independent claim is also included for a car.
