The device has an identifying unit identifying positions of an entry point (21) on a surface of cochlea and a control point (20) in sinus tympani. The identifying unit is operable through an external auditory canal. A processing unit e.g. personal computer, determines a straight-line path (T) passing through the points from coordinates of the points and defines a docking point (22) on an outside surface of mastoid bone. A drilling unit formed of a robot arm and drill bit (27) drills a passage up to the cochlea through the bone along the path so as to create an access passage to the cochlea. An independent claim is also included for a method for using an assistance providing device in otologic surgery of a patient.
