The method involves measuring and storing electrical power consumed by a ventilator at the time of starting of the ventilator, and measuring electrical power consumed by the ventilator during operation of the ventilator. The values of the measured electric power are compared. The presence of icing is detected if the measured electrical power during operation is greater than x percent higher than a nominal electrical power, or if the power consumed is greater than y percent of the nominal power, where defrosting is carried out in a de-icing mode.
