The method involves opening (EE) injectors (3) fitting to cylinders, and forecasting (DD) a number of pump strokes needed to reach threshold pressure from bearing pressure (Pi). Opening of the injectors is authorized when the number of pump strokes is higher than a threshold number. Fuel pressure inside a common rail is measured (AA), and the bearing pressure from the measured fuel pressure is determined (BB). Variation of pressure between the bearing pressure and the threshold pressure is calculated (CC). An independent claim is also included for a device for controlling an internal combustion engine.
