The device (D) has an inflatable airbag (SG) initially folded-up, and including an opening (OV) to allow air to be discharged from the airbag in an event of swelling of the airbag. The airbag has a mechanical control unit (MC) to control an access to the opening according to depression of the airbag by a passenger during inflation, where the access is restricted when the depression is large so as to vary stiffness of the airbag depending on the depression. A fabric link (L) is fixedly attached with a membrane (MB) of the control unit and a part (PM) of an internal surface (FI) of the airbag. An independent claim is also included for a vehicle.
