The device (20) has a transmitter (21) intended to emit an ultrasonic signal (Se) within a cartridge (3) containing a reducing agent i.e. ammonia, and a receiver (22) intended to receive a reflected ultrasonic signal (Sr) within the cartridge. A controller is intended to compare the reflected ultrasonic signal with reference signals corresponding to different filling levels of the ammonia to deduce the filling level of the ammonia in the cartridge, where the transmitter and the receiver are integrated inside the same case (24). An independent claim is also included for a method for gauging an amount of reducing agent stored in a form of solid material in a cartridge of a system for reducing nitrogen oxides contained in exhaust gas of a car.
