The engine has an ethanol introduction unit (8) for introducing ethanol into a combustion chamber (1) for formation of a high-carbon mixture with air that is admitted into the chamber. A diesel fuel introduction unit (7) is separated from the ethanol introduction unit, and directly introduces the diesel fuel into the chamber. A control unit controls the introduction of diesel fuel from the diesel fuel introduction unit into the chamber in a phased manner in relation to a position of a piston (6) in a driving cycle to initiate combustion of the high-carbon mixture present in the chamber. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for igniting a four-stroke compression ignition internal combustion engine (2) a car.
