The device (D) has a closed capsule (CA) for an electrochemical cell (CE) of a battery (BA) and containing thermal energy absorption liquid i.e. fire extinguishing agent. The capsule is provided with a degradable zone (ZG) that is to be placed opposite to a degasification zone (ZD). The degradable zone is degraded in presence of gas whose temperature is higher than a threshold value so as to allow absorption of a part of the thermal energy of hot gas that is discharged by the cell through the degasification zone, by the liquid. The degradable zone is formed of fusible material. An independent claim is also included for a battery.
