The hearth has a pot (15) made of a fire resistant material and presenting a cylindrical or widened form toward a upper combustion chamber (1) and a cross section lower than that of the chamber. Bottom of the pot is completely closed to form a base chamber (17). A lateral wall of the pot is provided with a ring of openings (19, 29) to form a primary combustion chamber (20) for a base of lighting solid fuel elements (18) pressed on the wall and/or the bottom of the pot, and partly extending in the primary combustion chamber for forming a secondary combustion chamber. The base chamber is adapted to retain lighting liquid such as domestic fuel sprinkling from the solid fuel elements of lighting and to collect ashes and embers of combustion. The ring of openings allows entry of air for combustion inside the pot. An independent claim is also included for a method for exploiting a hearth.
