The method involves arranging a measurement unit i.e. transmitter, (12) on a controllable shock absorber (14) to measure travel value (X) and travel speed (V) of a rod (15) of the shock absorber. A value of a steering signal that is sent to the shock absorber, is determined (32) based on a representation model of the shock absorber to obtain a force exerted by the shock absorber approximately equal to a desired instruction force (F). The travel speed is determined based on the desired instruction force, the measured travel value and the rod travel speed. An independent claim is also included for a damping system.
