The starter (200) has an intermediate resistor (203) to limit starting current of an electrical motor (205) e.g. direct current motor. The resistor has first terminal (203-1) to connect the intermediate resistor to a voltage source and second terminal (203-2) connected to the electrical motor. A relay (207) short-circuits the intermediate resistor with a traction coil (208) to initiate short-circuit and with a maintenance coil (210) to maintain short-circuit. First terminal (208-1) of the traction coil is directly connected to the first terminal of intermediate resistor. An independent claim is also included for a starter control circuit.
