The device (1) has a housing (3) for receiving a test piece (9) and maintaining it stationary. A bivalent mechanism (4) is provided for traction or compression of the test piece. The mechanism includes a setting unit for setting the bivalent mechanism in a traction mode or in a compression mode. An upper support is placed above the housing, and a lower support is arranged below the housing. Stress transmitting rods (41, 42) transmit a force exerted on the upper support and/or the lower support to the housing.
