The method involves cooling an air/fluid heat exchanger (6), and protecting the air/fluid heat exchanger against a nucleate boiling of a coolant i.e. water glycol mixture (7) flowing into the air/fluid heat exchanger. The air/fluid heat exchanger is protected against the risk of freezing, where the heat exchanger is protected against the risk of freezing by stopping a coolant circulating pump (11) in a coolant circuit (10). The exchanger is protected against the nucleate boiling of the coolant by activation of cooling of the heat exchanger and/or limitation of engine torque.
