Using a data integrity checksum in conjunction with the error correction data to correct errors in a data communication network

A system for receiving data, the system comprising: a computer; the computer being operable to receive data transmitted from a second computer over a data communication network; the computer being operable to receive error correction data transmitted from the second computer; the computer being operable to receive secondary data transmitted from the second computer; the computer being operable to process the data and the error correction data, if an error is identified in the received data, to determine at least one correction to the error; and to process the secondary data to determine whether the at least one correction should be made; the computer being operable to determine a further correction to the error based upon the secondary data and the error correction data if it is determined that the at least one correction should not be made; and wherein the error correction data comprises an ordered list of corrections, the computer being operable to determine a further correction using the next correction in the ordered list. The secondary data may comprise a checksum for said data. In this way the two layers of the error correction, that is the data integrity checksum and the error correction data, are used together until both layers confirm that the correction to the data is acceptable.
