A wooden apparatus for applying heat to a human eyelid in the treatment of external eyelid disease comprises a generally spoon-shaped piece of wood comprising an oval heat applicator 10 having dimensions sufficient to substantially cover a human eye and an elongated handle 12 extending integrally from the oval heat applicator. The specific heat capacity of the wood may be from 1500 to 1900 joules/kg/deg.0 and the thermal capacity of the oval heat applicator is from 22.0 to 29.0 joules/deg.C. The wood may be beech. At least one, and preferably both, of the opposite surfaces 16 of the heat applicator are flat, and in the latter case have different surface areas.
