Mouthpiece assembly method for a woodwind instrument

A mouthpiece assembly and alignment arrangement for a woodwind instrument in which a reed 20 is aligned and secured to a mouthpiece 30. The alignment arrangement prevents movement of the reed relative to the mouthpiece except in the opposite direction to the assembly direction. The alignment means may be located in the mouthpiece or in the reed, or in any combination of the mouthpiece and reed. For example, the reed is aligned and affixed to a recess in the mouthpiece, where the edge surfaces of the reed abut the edge surfaces of the recess. Alternatively, one or more protrusions formed on the mouthpiece (51, 52, figure 4), reed or separate to both, fit corresponding recesses in the reed (53, 54, figure 5) or mouthpiece. The alignment means locates the tip (22, figure 2) of the reed close to the lip (32, figure 2) of the mouthpiece in a highly repeatable manner.
