TREATMENT METHOD USING SYMPATHOLYTIC AGENT SUCH AS HEXAMETHONIUM TO SEVERELY ILL PATIENTS WITH ENTEROVIRUS

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for inhibiting the excessive release of catecholamines of mammals infected by the enterovirus 71 (EV71) encephalitis, and more specifically, a method for reversing the cardiopulmonary damage caused from the EV71 encephalitis in an animal model by using a sympatholytic agent.SOLUTION: The present invention demonstrates that an early administration of a suitable amount of hexamethonium to the rats mimicking enterovirus 71 infection will attenuate the acute excessive release of catecholamines in the body of each rat, and thus, cardiac dysfunction and pulmonary edema generally caused by EV71 encephalitis is prevented and the survival rate of the rats increases.
