The failure detection mechanism provides an enhancement to the fast rerouting technology based on PIM-SM. In response to detecting a loss of connection, the network node determines whether the network node can reroute multicast data traffic. If the network node does not have a faultless secondary path, the network node can send a notification packet and send the notification packet to the downstream portion of the multicast tree. The notification packet can trigger one or more downstream nodes to switch to a redundant secondary path and reroute the multicast data traffic. [Selection] Figure 4B
