Disclosed are systems and methods for link adaptation for multi-hop paths in a wireless mesh network (10). In one embodiment, the wireless mesh network (10) includes network nodes (12, 14) in a path through the wireless mesh network (10). Network node (12, 14) indicates the provisional bottleneck information flow rate for the path from the destination network node (12) to the source network node (14) through one or more intermediate network nodes (12). Based on the backward propagation of information, the bottleneck information flow rate for the path is determined. A target information flow rate for a route that is less than or equal to the bottleneck information flow rate for the route is determined. Based on forward propagation information indicative of the target information flow rate for the path, modulation / coding scheme (MCS) and in some embodiments the transmission mode is for each network other than the destination network node (12) in the path.
