A method for managing the number of pilot rotations held will be described. The apparatus is a memory configured to store a data structure comprising a set of modulation and coding (MCS) available for an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system, wherein each MCS is associated with an associated pilot reservation. A memory having a number of times may be provided. The apparatus further includes a processor circuit coupled to the memory that identifies the MCS, communicates the packet using the plurality of subcarriers of the OFDM system, and from the memory is a pilot associated with the MCS. Configured to retrieve a hold count, the pilot hold count may comprise processor circuitry that indicates when to shift the pilot tone between subcarriers of the plurality of subcarriers during communication of the packet.
