The present invention relates to a method of operating a phagocytic epilation device in which a drive mechanism is used to rotate a plurality of picking heads of a picking bank, and to such a picking bank. Each picking head is attached to the outside of the cover member by a shaft protruding from the opening of the cover member and supported by the bearing. The drive mechanism is disposed inside the cover member opposite to the picking head. In order to protect the drive mechanism from deterioration, gas or air is flowed forward to the drive mechanism along the inflow path inside the cover member. When the device is in operation, the gas or air has a lower relative humidity than the air surrounding the picking head, thus blowing away moisture entering the picking bank. In order to further reduce the water ingress, it is preferred that the gas or air flow is such that an overpressure is preferably generated inside the cover member which is always always higher than the outside pressure.
