Compressed multilayer silica soot preform for manufacturing optical fibers with complex refractive index profiles in one sintering process

A substrate is provided, and one or more layers are applied to the substrate using a radial pressing technique to form a soot blank, and the soot blank is sintered and sintered in the presence of a gaseous refractive index modifying dopant. The manufacture of optical fibers by using an external method of drawing tied soot blanks provides a process that more efficiently and cost-effectively generates complex refractive index profiles.
