A method for providing an accurate three-dimensional scan of the dental arch area is disclosed. The dental arch region has two sections (106, 108) and a connection region between the two sections. The connection area has homogeneous characteristics. A connecting geometry tool (300) having at least one definable feature is attached to the dental arch region. The definable feature is superimposed on at least a portion of the connection area. The dental arch area is scanned and a scanned data set of the dental arch area is generated. Based on the scanned data set, definable features of the connection geometry tool on the connection area are determined. Based on data relating to definable features from the scanned data set, the dimensions of the dental arch area are determined.
