PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To avoid loss of synchronization of a generator with a power supply network and damage to the generator, which are caused by a power supply network fault and result in increase in the rotary speed of an internal combustion engine supplying power and a rotor thereof.SOLUTION: There is provided a method of operating a generator 2 connected to a power supply network 1, in particular a synchronous generator, during a network fault in the power supply network 1, in particular during an electric short-circuit. Electric excitation of the generator 2 is at least temporarily reduced in dependence on the value of at least one operating parameter of the generator 2 prior to the network fault and/or during the network fault.
