PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an iron chelate generating coating material which continuously generates iron ions and allows generated iron ions to exist in water in an ionic state, and which is easily fixed at a predetermined position without being affected by water stream such as ocean current or rise and fall of the tide and thereby achieves the continuous generation of iron ions at a desired position, to provide an iron chelate generating material using the iron chelate generating coating material, and to provide a method for improving an underwater biological environment.SOLUTION: The iron chelate generating coating material contains a film forming component, an iron powder, a carbon powder and a chelating material. The iron chelate generating material is obtained by forming a coating film formed from the iron chelate generating coating material on a support which is capable of being retained in water so as not to be swept away by water stream. The method for improving an underwater biological environment includes retaining the iron chelate generating material in water.
