A mass spectrometer is disclosed that includes an RF ion guide or ion trap and a device that is positioned and adapted to supply reagent gas within the RF ion guide or ion trap. The mass spectrometer includes a photoionization device and (i) fragments or dissociates the first ions in an RF ion guide or ion trap to form second ions and neutral molecules; and (ii) the photoionization device. And a control system arranged and adapted to photoionize and / or photoexcite the reagent gas to form reagent ions, excited species or radical species.
