An improved detector system for a time-of-flight mass spectrometer that can process, for example, 109 events / second and does not have the inherent problems known to both ADC and TDC detector systems. An ion detector for a time-of-flight mass spectrometer comprising a single microchannel plate 1 arranged to receive ions 2 and output electrons 3 is disclosed.
