Some embodiments relate to a method of treating hyperbilirubinemia comprising administering to a baby a therapeutic amount of a metalloporphyrin. Administration is such that when the infant's measured total serum bilirubin level is at or below that level indicated by the AAP nomogram to initiate phototherapy, the infant's measured total serum bilirubin level is the initiation of phototherapy in the infant. Or when the infant's measured total serum bilirubin level is approximately at the level suggested to initiate phototherapy. Administration may take place regardless of the infant's total serum bilirubin level. In some embodiments, administration of the metalloporphyrin does not cause QT prolongation.
