Detachable coil mechanism with flexible distal element, resistive electric heating element and shape memory polymer element. The present invention relates to an embolic coil separation system which includes an elongated, flexible shaped memory tube having an inner wall surface defining an inner lumen. A distal portion of the shape memory polymer tube has enlarged and reduced diameter configurations. An embolic coil is releasably mounted on the shape memory polymer tube by a releasably attached head piece within a distal portion of the shape memory polymer tube. An elongate heating element disposed longitudinally along and in immediate contact with the inner wall surface of the distal tubular wall of the memory polymer tube provides uniform, direct heating to release the embolic head and coil attached thereto when the element resistive heating is energized.
