The method involves multiplying phase voltage values (U2-U4) with respective weighting factors (ga-gc). The voltage values are added to phase current values (IL2-IL4). A zero current (I0) is determined based on asymmetrical components (w', b') such that an asymmetrical real power flow of a multilevel converter is symmetrized. A control state (A) for converter strands (8-10) is determined based on the modified phase current values. The strands are controlled corresponding to the determined control state. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer program comprising instructions for performing a method for operating a multilevel converter (2) a control device for performing a method for operating a multilevel converter.
