The conjugates of the present invention are unusually well suited for treatment of chronic conditions because they are less likely to induce the formation of antibodies and/or accelerated clearance than are similar conjugates prepared from protein preparations containing traces of large aggregates. The invention describes uricase conjugate containing purified uricase conjugated polyethylene glycol or polyethylene oxide, wherein the uricase in said conjugate comprises purified tetrameric or octomeric uricase forms prepared by the removal of aggregates that are larger than octamers, wherein the uricase contains at the most 2 percent of aggregates the are larger than octamers.
