SWEETER HERBAL FORMULATIONS OF MOMORDICA FOR DIABETES MELLITUS

The present invention relates to novel polyherbal tablet formulations for controlling hyperglycaemia and hyperlipidaemia and use thereof for management of diabetes, comprising a mixture of standardized extracts from Momordica charantia, Cinnamomum cassia and Stevia rebaudiana. The study examined the acute toxicity, antihyperglycaemic and antihyperlipidaemic effects of two new poly-herbal formulations, formulation-1 and formulation-2. A significant increase in the body weight was observed in the diabetic groups treated with both formulations. There was a significant reduction (p0.001) in the plasma glucose, total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG) and low density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol levels and significant increase (p0.001) in high density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol in the treated diabetic group compared to the control. The results indicate that Formulation-2 has potent antihyperglycaemic and antihyperlipidaemic activities.
