The present invention relates to the of new chromone alkaloid of formula 1 isolated from the plant Dysoxylum binectariferum. The compound 5,7-dihydroxy-6-(3-hydroxy-I - methylpiperidin-4-yl)-2-methyl-4H-chromen-4-one, is found to be a potent inhibitor of cell growth and proliferation and also inhibit production of pro-inflammatory cytokines. The formulations of this particular compound can be used for treatment of cancer and inflammation.
