pThe present invention consists in a method for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer characterized by the fact that an increase in the levels of Trop- 2 in the tumor , as compared to the levels of Trop- 2 in the corresponding normal tissues , constitutes a biological marker that can predict the tumor response to anticancer therapy with drugs directed against components of the signalling network of Trop - 2, including but not limited to drugs which inhibit CD9 , Akt and molecules of the tetraspanin signalling network. More particularly , the invention concerns the use of the biological marker Trop -2 in the screening of new compounds , and in the clinical setting as an indicator for the use of anticancer drugs targeted against molecules of the signalling network of Trop- 2, including but not limited to drugs that inhibit CD9 , Akt and molecules of the tetraspanin signalling network./p
