The invention relates to an electric direct drive generator for a wind turbine equipped with salient poles rotor and a cryostat ladder to accommodate superconducting coils and kept at a cryogenic temperature while inside the cryostat is maintained without cooling. Thanks to the invention an optimum thermal insulation of the coils is achieved without continuous filling the cryostat and a good distribution of the magnetic field without the use of expensive materials is ensured.
