A method for detecting and quantitatively analyze hexose monophosphate in a biological sample, comprising: (a) obtaining a sample of the biological sample in a form suitable for ionization, wherein the extract of hexose monophosphate biological sample suitable for ionization is obtained by extraction of the sample with a solvent selected from the group consisting of acetonitrile in water, ethyl acetate in water, tetrahydrofuran in water, methanol in water, and isopropanol in water; b) ionizing the sample to form a stream of gas phase ions; (C) selecting precursor ions having a molecular mass to charge ratio hexose monophosphate; (D) fragmenting molecular ions precursors for hexose monophosphate product ions; (E) selecting the product of interest from other ions product ions by their mass to charge ratio; (F) detecting the product ions of interest and obtain their ionic strengths; and (g) using the ionic strengths of the product ions to: (i) determining by spectral analysis the hexose monophosphate in quantitative abundance of biological sample; and / or (ii) determining the concentration of hexose monophosphate or a particular species thereof by comparing ion intensities of a sample or control samples having (n) a known hexose monophosphate concentration and / or the species particularly thereof; and / or (iii) determine the ratios of ion abundance (IAR) indicating the relative amount of a kind of hexose monophosphate present in the biological sample.
