Process for the purification of a technical grade methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE), comprising the following steps: a) making available a technical grade MTBE (I), which contains at least MTBE, methanol, C4 hydrocarbons, C5 hydrocarbons and acetone; and b) distilling the technical grade MTBE (I) in a head product (II) containing C4 and C5 hydrocarbons, in a side stream (III) containing acetone, methanol and MTBE, and in a tail product (IV) that contains MTBE.
