Compositions comprising fucose-mannose ligand (FML) and saponin for the preparation of vaccines that block the transmission of leishmaniasis in humans and animals

A composition comprising Fucose-Mannose (FML) ligand and saponin, for use as a blocking vaccine against the transmission of canine visceral leishmaniasis, where administration of the composition to a canine subject produces an antibody in said subject in response to FML which inhibits the binding of procyclic promastigotes of Leishmaniasis donovani and chagasi to the membrane of the middle intestine of Phlebotominae, thus preventing the transmission of leishmaniasis by Phlebotominae to humans and animals.
