Catalyzed cycloaddition of alkynes and ruthenium organic azides

Process for preparing a 1,2,3-triazol-disubstituted 1,5 or 1,4,5-trisubstituted 1,2,3-triazole comprising the following steps: (i) mixing in a solvent a first compound, having an acetylene group with a second compound having an azide group, to form a reaction mixture; and (ii) contacting the reaction mixture with a certain amount of ruthenium catalyst sufficient to catalyze the formation of 1,2,3-triazol-disubstituted or 1,5-triazole 1,4 1,2,3, 5-trisubstituted, wherein the ruthenium catalyst includes one or more ligands and one of the ligands on the ruthenium catalyst is a pentamethylcyclopentadienyl anion; wherein, if the first compound is a terminal acetylene, the product will be a 1,2,3-triazol 1,5-disubstituted, and if the first compound is an internal acetylene, the product will be a 1,2,3- 1,4,5-trisubstituted triazole.
