The present invention is in the field of oncology and the treatment of cancer. The present invention includes methods for predicting the risk of recurrence of breast tumors using signature expression of certain miRNAs. Specifically, the present invention relates to a method for determining the risk of recurrence of breast cancer comprising measuring the expression levels of at least one miRNA selected from the group consisting of miR-149-5p (SEQ ID NO: 1), miR-10a-5p, (SEQ ID NO: 2), miR-20b-5p, (SEQ ID NO: 3), miR-30a-3p (SEQ ID NO: 4); miR-342-5p and, (SEQ ID NO: 5) in a tumor sample, wherein an altered level of expression of at least one miRNA in the tumor, compared to the expression level in a control sample, is indicative of a high risk of tumor recurrence. Furthermore, the present invention relates to tools and kits for carrying out the method of the present invention.
